Our Story
How SOLAM came to be.
A community savings and welfare circle for the brothers and sisters of Masjid Daarus-Salaam — born from a single conversation, sustained by amanah.
The beginning
It started after Maghrib.
In May 2026, a small group of friends from Masjid Daarus-Salaam stayed behind after the evening prayer. The conversation turned to the things every Muslim family carries quietly: school fees, a sudden illness, a marriage we can't quite afford, land we wish we owned.
By the end of that sitting, fourteen of us had agreed on three principles:
- We will save together — small amounts, every week and every month.
- We will not engage in riba — not as borrowers, not as lenders, not as savers.
- When one of us is shaken, the others will steady the ground.
SOLAM is what we named that agreement.
Our three pillars
Save. Unite. Uplift.
Save: a structured monthly contribution toward owning land — together, in twelve months, what would take a lone family years.
Unite: a weekly welfare contribution that builds Munomukabi — the fund we draw on for grief, illness, and the joyful expenses too.
Uplift: from year two, Qard Hasan — interest-free loans from the group itself, backed by fellow members.
How we govern ourselves
SOLAM operates under a written constitution dated May 2026. The cohort is led by an Executive Committee of seven elected office bearers, each serving a two-year term:
GS
General Secretary
Records
IA
Internal Auditor
Verifier
DW
Welfare Officer
Care & discipline
Decisions of substance are taken by shura — consultation of the Executive, and where appropriate, the full membership. The Treasurer records every payment; the Internal Auditor verifies independently. Bank signatories require at least two authorised signatures.
Why Shari’ah-compliant
Because the alternative is unthinkable to us.
- No riba (interest) anywhere — not on what we save, not on what we lend.
- All loans are Qard Hasan — repaid in the exact amount borrowed.
- The welfare fund operates on ta’awun (mutual cooperation) and the spirit of sadaqah.
- The group banks with a Shari’ah-compliant institution.
"And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression."
— Qur’an 5:2
